Create, Modify and Delete Accounts in Windows XP Home

In the previous section we discussed the various types of accounts and the purpose of each account. Now we will show how to create the accounts, modify the level of each account as well as delete the accounts.

Note

All these actions explained above can be done only by the in-build administrator or an user who has been granted administrative privileges. A user with non administrative privileges will not be able to see the links that perform these functions.

  • Adding a new account.

  •   We will show how to create a new account in Windows XP Home Edition.

Click on Start menu and then click “Control Panel”.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.

Click on “Create a new account”.

Type a name for the new user account, and then click Next.

Select Computer administrator or Limited, depending on the type of account you want to assign to the new user, and then click Create Account.

    Note

The name you assign to the account is the name that will appear on the Welcome screen and the Start menu.

  • Modifying an existing Account.

  •   Now modifying an account means a lot because there are several actions that can be done during this phase. And it also depends on the privileges of the person who is logged on. If the person is logged as administrator then he can do the following.

If the user himself is logged in with limited user privileges then he can do only the following.

  • Change the name

  • Change the password

  • Remove the password

  • Change the picture

  • Choose the account type

  • Delete the account

  •    Let us demonstrate with an example. Let us change the account type from limited user to administrator.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.

      Click the user's account name.

      Click Change the account type.

Click the type of account you want, and then click Change Account Type.

    Note

If you are the only user on the computer with a computer administrator account, you will not be able to change your account type because there must be at least one person with a computer administrator account on the computer.

  • Deleting Accounts

  •   Now let us delete the account that we created above. Since we created the user for demo purposes, let us delete the same.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.

      Click the user's account name.

The screen “what do u want to change about this account” appears.

      Select “Delete the account”

The confirmation “Do u want to keep the files..” is prompted. Select No.

Finally a confirmation comes saying that the account was deleted. Click ok.

The account is deleted and you are returned to the “user accounts” page.
