Let us look at each of the features in Tweak UI. This is based on version 2.10.0.0 for Windows XP (SP1 and higher) and Windows Server 2003.
This gives several tips in Windows XP plus tips how to get things done faster.
Allows the user to run Group Policy in Windows XP Professional. Alternatively you can click on Start | Run and type the phrase “gpedit.msc” and Group Policy console appears.
This enables the playing of a beep soud (customizable in the "Sounds" control panel when a system error occurs. This setting does not affect custom error sound played by applications. This is a per-user setting.
This enables the animation effect that occurs when you open the list box portion of a combo box control. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the shadow-effect underneath the mouse cursor. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the smooth scrolling effect that occurs when you scroll through a list-box control. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the animation effect that occurs when you open a menu. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the fade-in animation when you open a menu. Otherwise the animation is a slide. In order for this checkbox to have an effect, menu animation must also be enabled. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the fade-out animation when you select a menu item. This is a per-user setting.
This controls mouse-related window effects such as tooltip windows over the Minimize, Restore and Close buttons. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the sliding animation when a tooltip appears. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the window animation effect that occurs when you minimize, maximize, or restore a window. This is a per-user setting.
This controls the fade-out animation when a tooltip disappears. This is a per-user setting.
This allows Windows to rearrange files on the hard disk when the computer is not in use to improve performance. This is a system wide setting which requrires a restart for changes to take effect.
This enables the display of the Windows version and monitor information (if multiple monitors are installed) in the corner of every monitor. This is a per-user setting. if you are running an evaluation version of Windows, the version will always be displayed. If you have enabled Web content on the desktop, the version will never be displayed. Changing this setting requries a logoff.
Enables to user to “prevent applications from stealing focus” from the window you are working in. Instead, their taskbar icon will flash to indicate that the application is trying to get your attention. This is a per-user setting.
Settings control the size of the window that appears when you type Alt+Tab. Be careful not to choose values that would result in a window so large that it will not fit on the screen. (You can fit ten rows and thirteen columns on a safe mode 640*480 screen.). When this is changed the user must log off and back to enable the new settings.
The Menu Speed slider control sets the speed at which cascading menus automatically open when you move the mouse over them. The fastest setting causes them to open immediately and the slowest setting is extraordinary slow.
Click sensitivity specifies how close together two mouse clicks need to be (in pixels) to be considered a double click. This is a per-user setting
Drag sensitivity specifies how far (in pixels) the mouse must move with the button held down before the system decides that you are dragging the object. Increase this value if you find that you are dragging objects accidentally when you click on them. This is a per-user setting.
This is used to detect when the mouse hovers over the icon to get selected. The size of the region is determined by the hover sensitivity in pixels. This is a per-user setting.
This is used to control the number of lines when the mouse wheel is scrolled. This can be either one page at a time or a particular number of lines at a time. This is a per-user setting.
The “Activation follows mouse” checkbox enables X-Mouse style window activation. When X-mouse style window activation is enabled, you need only move the mouse into a window in order to give it focus. Normally you must click on a window in order to give it focus. This is a per-user setting.
This check-box controls whether or not Help and Support appears on the classic Start Menu and whether the option to show Help and Support appears on the start menu.
This allows to display the Log off option from the Start Menu. This is a per-user setting.
This check box enables the display of “Documents” on the classic start menu and enables the “List my most recently opened documents” checkbox on the Start menu customization dialog. This is a per-user setting.
If this is unchecked then the ability to add Web Content to the desktop will be disabled. This is a per-user setting.
This check-box will control whether Explorer will clear the recent documents history, run dialog history and typed-URL history when you log off. This is a per-user setting.
If this check-box is enabled then when Explorer is in single-click mode, double clicks are treated as a single click instead of as two single-clicks (launching the document twice). This is a per-user setting.
This feature controls animated window scrolling in Explorer and other programs.
This controls whether hotkeys such as Windows+M are enabled. Note that not all hotkeys respect this setting. This is a per-user setting. Changing this setting requires a logoff.
This enables/disables Web content from being added to or removed from the desktop.
This enables the tracking of recently opened documents on the Start menu and on the file menu of many applications. (note that some applications do not respect this setting). This is a per-user setting.
This allows the “My Network Places” folder to track network resources containing recently-accessed documents. This is a per-user setting.
If this is checked then any operations performed on Document.htm (or document.html) will also be performed on “Document_files” and vice versa. For eg. If you delete Document.htm, then the document_files folder will also be deleted. This is a per-user setting.
When this is enabled the phrase “Shortcut to” will be appended to the beginning of newly-created shortcuts. This is a per-user setting.
If this is checked then the option to encrypt or decrypt a file or folder will become available when you right click on it, provided that the drive supports encryption and encryption has not been disabled by your system administrator. This is a per-user setting.
This controls whether the Links folder is visible on the Favourites menu.
This controls whether My Documents is shown at the top of the Documents submenu of the classic Start Menu.
This controls whether My Pictures is shown at the top of the Documents submenu of the classic Start Menu.
This controls whether Network Connections appears on the classic start menu.
Use this option to return to the old Windows 2000 way of searching on the Internet. This is a per-user setting. The open IE Windows will have to be closed and opened for this setting to take place.
If this is checked the Explorer will sort files so that, for eg “File 5” comes before “File 10” because 5 comes before 10. If this is unchecked then Explorer will use literal sorting, in which case “File 10” will come before “File 5” because 1 comes before 5. This is a per-user setting.
If this is checked, then pressing the Tab key when an autocomplete list is displayed will move focus to the next item in the list. Normally the tab key moves focus to the next item in the dialog box. Even if this setting id disabled, you can move through the Auto complete list with the up and down arrow keys. This is a per-user setting.
This is a system-wide setting. There are 4 types of shortcut icons that can be used (arrow, light arrow, none and custom). Please note that changing the shortcut overlay may cause some icons to lose any custom positions.
This enables the changing of the colors of compressed files, hot tracking and encrypted files. To enable color changing of compressed files, Explorer must be configured to show compressed files in a different color. This is a per-user setting.
The image quality slider control sets the fidelity of the thumbnail images. Higher quality thumbnails require more memory and disk space. This is a per-user setting. This setting applies only to the new thumbnails. Previously created thumbnails retain their original quality setting.
This enables changing the keyboard settings for customized actions. is a per-user setting.
This allows customizing the settings of folders to be remembered. To conserve memory, Explorer remembers only a limited number of folder customizations. Default is 400. This value can be either increased or decreased. When the limit is exceeded, customizations for the folder lease recently visited will be discarded. This is a per-user setting.
This allows changing the amount of time (in milliseconds), each picture in the slide show should remain on the screen. This happens when you choose Slide show from Picture and Fax Viewer. Default value is 5000 milliseconds. For the change to take effect in a particular folder you must close the folder and reopen it.
When this is checked, Autocomplete will be enabled in the “File Name” edit box. This is a per-user setting.
When this is checked this allows the common file open/save dialogs to remember the names of the files you most recently opened or saved. This list of names is available by clicking the down arrow at the right-hand side of the “File name” edit box. This is a per-user setting.
When this is checked the back button will be visible on the common file open/save dialogs which allows you to navigate to the previous directory.
This enables changing the location when a common dialog is opened. You can use the default values or you can choose a custom location to open when a common dialog box is opened. This is a per-user setting.
Uncheck this box to disable balloon tips in all applications that support Windows Themes.
If this is checked your name will be displayed at the top of the Start menu. This is a per-user setting. This does not affect the classic Start Menu.
If this is unchecked then all taskbar notification icons will be hidden, overriding any settings that you may have customized. This is a per-user setting.
This controls whether a balloon tip appears when Explorer detects that a drive is running low on available disk space. Only administrators will receive this warning. You must log off and back on to this setting to take effect.
This is used to customize the settings when “taskbar button grouping” is enabled. This allows to specify which applications should be collapsed into groups first. The options available are:
The Windows XP Start menu shows the Most frequently used programs on the left hand side. This settings allows you to choose what programs should come in this list as well as those programs which should not appear in this list. Note that the programs appearing will depend on the programs installed on that computer.
This allows you to check whether “Internet explorer”, “My Computer”, “My Documents”, “My network Places” and “Recycle Bin” appears on the desktop. The default icon is “Recycle Bin”.
This allows setting the first icon on the desktop to be either “My Documents” or “My Computer”. This is a per-system setting, available only if the current user has permission to alter the “My Computer” settings. After changing the setting, the user may need to select “Arrange By Name” from the desktop context menu for the change to take effect. Some applications will not respond to the new setting until you log off and back on.
This allows to select the drives that will be displayed in “My Computer” and “Explorer”.
This allows to change the location of special folders such as “CD Burning”, “Desktop”, “My Documents”, “My Music” etc. This does not move the files from the current location to the new location. To change the location and simultaneously move the files to the new location, right-drag the folder to its desired new location and select “Move here” rather than using this dialog.
This allows to enable autoplay on drives.
This allows to enable autoplay for CD-ROM and DVD-Rom.
This allows to specify the handlers for particular actions like playing automatically when a music cd is inserted in a CD-Rom drive.
This allows to specify how the letters are displayed in “My Computer”. The options are
This allows to hide/unhide the icons that appear in “Control Panel”. Hiding the extension does not uninstall it and it can be executed by running that command at the command line.
When you right click and select the New menu, certain files can be created automatically. This list allows you to delete certain types as well as create new types.
This allows the address bar to autocorrect http:// to http:// This is a per-user setting and Internet Explorer must be restarted for this setting to take effect.
This allows to search the operating system and registered applications when you type a string into the Address bar. This is a per-user setting and Internet Explorer must be restarted for this setting to take effect.
This allows to define a custom background image for Internet Explorer toolbar and Explorer toolbar.
This allows specifying the program to view the source code in Internet Explorer.
This allows to change the image that appears to be animating when Windows or Internet Explorer is busy. The custom image should be of 26 pixels square.

When your mouse is over an image in Internet Explorer a image toolbar appears for saving, printing, opening “My pictures” folder and sending through email. The image toolbar appears only if the image size is at least 200 pixels in size. This setting allows you to set the minimum size of the image in order to get the image toolbar.
This allows to specify the keyboard function for “filename completion”, “directory completion and word separators. This also allows to enable selection coloring.
If this is checked then active RAS connections will not be closed when you log off.
If this is checked then the autoexec.bat file will be scanned for SET commands and the variables found will be set in the user’s environment. This is a per-user setting.
If this is checked then the list of domains on the logon dialog will contain brief information about each domain after the domain name. You will need to restart the computer for changes to this settings to take effect.
If this is checked then the list of domains on the logon dialog will show the full DNS names rather than the NETBIOS names. You will need to restart the computer for changes to this settings to take effect.
This allows to set the username and password so that the system automatically logs in at startup. The user need not select his user name and type the password every time. To suppress autologon, hold the shift key when the system is starting.
This allows to enable viewing of unread mails on the Welcome Screen and also to specify how long mails have to be marked as unread. This setting can be applied to all users or a specific user only (the user who is currently logged on).
This allows to copy the settings such as animation, colors, font smoothing, keyboard, mouse, screen saver, wall paper to the logon desktop.
This allows to change the grace period of the screen saver in seconds before it prompts for the password.
Controls permission to read or change server information.

Rebuilds all Explorer icons and removes unused Explorer icons from memory. Rebuild icons when you find that Explorer is displaying the wrong icon for a program or shortcut. Note that repairing icons may cause icons to lose any custom positions.
Restores the functionality of the Font folder. Repair the font folder when you find that the Font folder has begun acting like a normal folder.
Restores the custom icon to the My Music folder.

Repair Regedit when you find that Regedit is not showing all the columns in its view.
